Mount Ida College’s New England Institute (N.E.I.) is currently one of the few institutions to offer a bachelor degree in funeral home management.
N.E.I.’s Funeral Home Management program incorporates much of what is learned in a traditional two year funeral service program and adds specialized courses that focus on advanced funeral service courses, business management and bereavement studies. In addition to the standard professional courses required for licensure by the American Board of Funeral Service Education and the Conference of Funeral Examining Boards of the United States, Inc., advertising, communications, bereavement, grief and other issues specific to the profession and community outreach techniques are also covered.
Career and Graduate Study Options
Students with a bachelor degree in Funeral Home Management, upon passing the National Board Examination and completion of apprenticeships, are eligible for licensure as funeral directors and embalmers in all 50 states. Graduates of this bachelor degree program are not only well positioned to run and own their own funeral homes; they are also uniquely qualified to excel within any corporate setting serving the funeral service profession. In addition, students have the opportunity to attend graduate school, if desired, and students have chosen to seek graduate degrees in business, counseling, and other related fields of study.
Program Aims
The central aim of the Funeral Home Management program is recognition of funeral service personnel as:
- Members of the human services profession;
- Members of the community in which they serve;
- Participants in the relationship between bereaved families and those engaged in the funeral service profession;
- Professionals knowledgeable of and compliant with federal, state, provincial/territorial, and local regulatory guidelines (in the geographic area where they practice) as well as;
- Professionals sensitive to the responsibility for public health, safety, and welfare in caring for human remains.
Learning Objectives
In addition to the All College Curriculum skills and perspective,the objectives of the Funeral Home Management program are :
- To enlarge the background and knowledge of students about the funeral service profession;
- To educate students in every phase of funeral service and to help enable them to develop proficiency and skills necessary for the profession;
- To educate students concerning the responsibilities of the funeral service profession to the community at large;
- To emphasize high standards of ethical conduct;
- To provide a curriculum at the post-secondary level of instruction; and
- To encourage student and faculty research in the field of funeral service.

Accreditation and National Board Examination Passage Rate Information:

- The annual passage rate of first-time takers on the National Board Examination (NBE) for the most recent three-year period for this institution and all ABFSE accredited funeral service education programs is posted on the ABFSE Web site (www.abfse.org).”
Progression in Program: To be eligible for the National Board Examination (NBE), students must earn a C- or higher in all courses on subjects tested on that examination in the first two years of the program. A cumulative grade point average of 2.00 in all subjects is necessary. Note: Students with grades below “C” in subjects tested on the NBE tend to fail those portions of the examination; students whose average is no better than “C” are at risk.
In addition to the above progression requirements, a minimum grade of C- or higher is also required for all program-specific required courses (courses with the designation of FS) in this major.
The Executive Director of the New England Institute, the Program Director, and the Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs will review the standing of any student whose record and/or performance may indicate termination from the program. Students who have failed a course twice cannot be considered in good standing in the Funeral Home Management Program. The Review Board may discontinue a student’s candidacy in the program whenever poor academic performance warrants such action. In addition, all College progression standards apply.
The American Board of Funeral Service Education requires that all students take the National Board Examination (NBE) as a requirement for graduation. Students must pay a $350 fee when they register for this examination.
